Effective July 1, 2025, Germany will abolish the remonstration procedure, an administrative appeal process that allowed visa applicants to request an internal review of their denied applications by the Federal Foreign Offi ce. This decision aims to streamline visa processing and reduce waiting times by eliminating this step.
The remonstration process provided applicants with a free, extrajudicial avenue to challenge visa denials, often facilitating the correction of minor errors or omissions without the need for a new application or lengthy legal proceedings. Its removal follows a pilot project initiated on June 1, 2023, across several German visa sections, which demonstrated that eliminating this step freed up staff capacity, allowing for faster processing of both Schengen and national visa applications.
With the discontinuation of the remonstration procedure, applicants whose visas are denied will now have two options: reapply or fi le a formal judicial appeal. Judicial appeals are more costly, require court hearings, and can take up to two years to resolve, in contrast to the administrative remonstration. This change underscores the importance of submitting complete and accurate visa applications. Applicants are encouraged to double-check their documents and ensure all requirements are met to minimize the risk of rejection.
In tandem with this policy change, Germany has been improving its digital infrastructure for visa applications. Since January 2025, online national visa applications have been made available for skilled workers, students, and family reunifi cation cases. This digital system aims to improve application quality and reduce delays caused by incomplete submissions.
